The summer of 1837. In England, the young Queen Victoria has just succeeded to the throne, but the thoughts of a young woman walking on the sands at Calais are a long way from that. Liberty Lane has just been to view her father’s body in the mortuary.

She has been told he was killed in a duel, but she knows that’s a black lie. She is determined to find out the truth, but she’s never been more alone in her life.

As she investigates, she finds that her father’s death is bound up with events that could shake the throne of England.
