This story takes you on many twists and turns as Sherlock's past is revealed and past mysteries are solved. Follow along as Sherlock and Watson head to France on a mission from Mycroft. When everything that was planned goes array they must solve a murder and track down the person responsible. They encounter several side mysteries along the way as they end up solving the case. Each side mystery is used to help solve the main plot and does not take away from the main story but adds that extra little surprise along the way.
I found this book to be a fast read, even though the book is quite large with four hundred plus pages, because I got so drawn into the story. While it is the second book in the Sherlock Holmes Adventures series it can easily be read as a standalone novel. Once you read UNQUIET SPIRITS you will want to read the first book if you haven't already. I loved every minute of reading this amazing novel and love a good Sherlock mystery.
MacBird has written and captured the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with a masterful storytelling adventure that is sure to leave you wanting more. The main characters and side characters are well developed and crafted with intriguing pasts so that the plot meshes smoothly. The setting is an ideal place for a Sherlock mystery helping to add to the overall suspense of the story. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good Sherlock Holmes mystery.
Book Summary
The new novel from the author of Art in the Blood. December 1889. Fresh from debunking a “ghostly” hound in Dartmoor, Sherlock Holmes has returned to London, only to find himself the target of a deadly vendetta.
A beautiful client arrives with a tale of ghosts, kidnapping and dynamite on a whisky estate in Scotland, but brother Mycroft trumps all with an urgent assignment in the South of France.
On the fabled Riviera, Holmes and Watson encounter treachery, explosions, rival French Detective Jean Vidocq… and a terrible discovery. This propels the duo northward to the snowy highlands. There, in a “haunted” castle and among the copper dinosaurs of a great whisky distillery, they and their young client face mortal danger, and Holmes realizes all three cases have blended into a single, deadly conundrum.
In order to solve the mystery, the ultimate rational thinker must confront a ghost from his own past. But Sherlock Holmes does not believe in ghosts…or does he?
