About the Author

Dorothy Kalins was the founding editor-in-chief of Metropolitan Home, which won the National Magazine Award for general excellence in 1990, leading an effort to raise money and awareness for DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids). Kalins became the first woman ever named Adweek's Editor of the Year. In 1999, she was awarded the prestigious Matrix Award for her work in magazines. Kalins founded Saveur in 1994, and relaunched Garden Design, serving as editor-in-chief for both award-winning magazines. In 2001 Kalins joined Newsweek as executive editor, where she helped rethink and redesign the magazine. In spring 2006, Kalins became a contributing editor to Newsweek. As principal of Dorothy Kalins Inc, she writes and edits for a number of publications and speaks frequently. Kalins directs the editorial curriculum for the Stanford Professional Publishing Course.
