There is a series of home invasion happening by a group dubbed The Savages when no one is home and they don't leave any clues. Now a wealthy home owner is killed and her husband is in critical condition. The thefts have reached a new level. DC Cooper's gut tells him that this may be separate from The Savage's crimes. Now Cooper must go out on his own and try to discover if his gut is correct.

Meanwhile DC Fry is stuck in a seminar and bored to death. Until her actions make her being able to stay in the seminar impossible. Sent back to the unit to help DC, Fry is feeling as if she no longer has a place there. The relationship between characters and their places in life seems to be nearing a crossroads.

THE DEVIL'S EDGE is part of the series written by Stephen Booth that follows the characters of Cooper and Fry. Each book can be read as a standalone where the mystery is involved. The characters grow and change over each book and this one confused me a little in that area. I thought Cooper and his finance had ended the last book with problems, yet in this one all seemed to be fine. Maybe it's explained in the next one or maybe I'm just easily confused.

The story itself is interesting and keeps you guessing. THE DEVIL'S EDGE is a good read as a standalone. As part of the series I thought he needed to look more into the relationship of Cooper and Fry. It seemed a little confusing and needs clarity.

Overall though THE DEVIL'S EDGE is a good story and enjoyable part of the series. THE DEVIL'S EDGE by Stephen Booth is a good mystery that makes you think.

Book Summary

When nobody's home, the Savages roam ...

The newspapers call them the Savages: a band of home invaders as merciless as they are stealthy. Usually they don't leave a clue—but this time, they've left a body. The first victim is found sprawled on her kitchen floor, blood soaking the terracotta tiles. Before long, another corpse is discovered, dead of fright. As the toll rises, it's up to DC Ben Cooper and DS Diane Fry to track down the killers. But the enemy isn't who they think it is. Beneath the sinister shadow of a mountain ridge called the Devil's Edge, a twisted game is under way, a game more ruthless than the detectives can imagine.

Packed with nerve-jangling suspense and moody atmosphere, this is a thriller to rival the very best of Peter Robinson and Peter James.
