Shane Adler is at a loss to where his life is going. He’s newly discharged from the Marines due to an injury during his deployment to Afghanistan. All he has is the dog he named Decoy, that had saved him there and he was able to bring home. With advice from another veteran, he decides to do a little DECOY TRAINING and have the two of them become search and rescue. Little does he know that the trainer would be a woman who changed his plans so easily.

Piper Lambert is a widow whose husband died in Iraq, and she is just now getting her life back. The last thing she wants is to be attracted to another military man. But Shane and Decoy draw her in as she trains them. Along with her own puppy Chipper, who becomes besties with Decoy, she finds there is a lot to like about Shane. When unexpected danger comes her way - she is more than glad that he and Decoy are around.

DECOY DUTY is part of the K-9s on Patrol series and author Caridad Pineiro does a fantastic job of blending everything together. Readers will get to know Piper and Shane, their struggles with the changes in their lives, and also enjoy the antics of the pets as they learn to be search and rescue dogs. You also get the feel of Idaho - the mountains and forests - which seems the perfect place to visit. The danger is realistic without going overboard. The romance is a bit tentative, but in keeping with the problems these two have been through. The secondary characters are a story in themselves with Emma - Piper's boss and friend, the various police officers and the young vet tech who is being romanced by one of the rookie cops. Ms. Pineiro has an amazing ability to make the people in this story seem so real and alive.
