Sergeant Corrie Welling of the Maradaine Constabulary is in a bind. She’s trapped on a ship with a group of kids, many who are dying in the filth they are stowed in. Corrie wants to save them all as that’s why she became a “stick” and put on the uniform to begin with, but death is quickly claiming the other captives. Fortune smiles on Corrie as she escapes, only to find herself working off a huge debt in a city that doesn’t care about her Druth heritage or her work as a sergeant. Not to be deterred, Corrie quickly adapts and hopes to form her own version of the constabulary, but another threat is on hand that threatens to destroy the Mocassa and all those whom Corrie has befriended.
AN UNINTENDED VOYAGE is the 13th book in the Maradaine series and picks up a thread from A PARLIAMENT OF BODIES featuring Corrie. One can easily pick up AN UNINTENDED VOYAGE as a standalone story, since the story focuses on Corrie after she is kidnapped in the earlier book. However, part of the beauty of the Maradaine series is how the books overlap and intertwine with each other so I suspect readers will want to see more of Marshall Ryan Maresca’s fascinating world!
I love Corrie’s determination and her sense of honor. Marshall Ryan Maresca does a marvelous job at infusing her dedication to the Constabulary into every interaction and every situation Corrie finds herself in. Unlike some of the other books set in the Maradaine world, AN UNINTENDED VOYAGE is very much character driven. We see Corrie thrown into completely unfamiliar circumstances where even the language and the culture itself are different and watch her learn to navigate. I love that Corrie never once turns from the core of who she is as a sergeant of the Maradaine Constabulary, even when circumstances are solidly against her.
AN UNINTENDED VOYAGE is an intriguing foray into the worlds outside the Druth territories as Marshall Ryan Maresca continues to expand the world building of his fabulous Maradaine tales. Magic and fanaticism clash headfirst with duty and honor in a fabulous showdown that leaves me wanting to know more about how other countries in the Maradaine world can be impacted by similar events. AN UNINTENDED VOYAGE offers so many future directions for Corrie and I can’t wait to see where Marshall Ryan Maresca takes us next!
