As soon as I read the blurb for this book I was hooked. I have a thing for red haired men, and Scottish men in particular. I could also relate to Clara because of her attitude to marriage. She was not in the market to get married, even though she was past the age women normally married. She was scared of being beholden to any man. That’s why I liked Liam. He persisted and acted goofy to get her attention. I continued to like him because he made room for Clara, and he allowed her to be herself.
The story became engrossing when they arrived in Scotland and ran across all Liam’s family and friends. It was so interesting to learn and read about glass blowing and whiskey. This is a side of Scotland I have never read about in any Scottish romance - at least I don’t think. I was also intrigued by the building of the castle and the work behind that.
The conflict of the story usually comes from an outside villain, but the villain in this story was Clara herself, fighting her heart in not wanting to attach herself to any man and I thought that was interesting. I loved that Liam’s father never posed a real threat and he backed down after a stern talking from Clara. All too often in romance’s the men are forceful in their ways.
The only con in this review would be the cover. I think that’s one of the reasons I couldn’t get into this book from the start. If you’re writing about a Scotsman, he should have red hair even though Liam was half Scottish. This whole story was told beautifully. I cannot wait to read the next in this series.
Book Summary
Welcome to book 1 in the Always a Scot series by USA Today Bestselling author Jade Lee!
Lord Loughton needs a strong wife to help him corral his wild Scottish relations. Of course, he may be the wildest of them all, or so thinks Lady Clara. The last thing she wants is to leave her beloved London for the highlands. She certainly won’t do it for a man who laughs when she’s trying to anger him, teases when he ought to be terrified, and kisses her when she’s not at all ready to marry anyone.
But a Scotsman must have his bride, so he brings her to the highlands on a ghost hunt because Lady Clara loves nothing more than a true haunting. What she finds instead of eerie doings is a family made stronger by their oddities. She has a place here if she’s strong enough to claim it. And a man who will fight by her side if she’s bold enough to embrace a wild Scottish ride.
