Katee Robert continues her Dark Olympus series with Psyche and Eros’ story, Electric Idol. The two know of each other; after all, it’s in your best interest to learn everything you can about the residents of Olympus. They won’t hesitate to stab you in the back (or worse) to climb the social ladder. But when they cross paths and Psyche shows a concern for Eros he’s never experienced, there’s no going back. And when a big target is painted on Psyche’s back, Eros can’t fall in line for the very first time in his life.
First things first with this story - know going in that it’s pretty heavy with the insta-I-might-be-in-love-with-you. I tell you this because it can be an issue for me. And while it definitely was an issue here, once I got past it, I enjoyed the story so much. I liked how Psyche saw past Eros’ cool and calm exterior to not only who he was, but also who he had the potential to be. And that was an important element of this story, because she saw in Eros things he couldn’t see in himself.
I love how quick on the draw Eros was with a solution to their problem. He found an ally in Psyche that was unexpected and the fact that she took care of him with no expectations really struck a chord with him. So when he was tasked with killing her, he just couldn’t do it. So the solution was simple - marriage. After all, his mother wouldn’t force him to murder his own wife. Speaking of Eros’ mother, Aphrodite was a real piece of work. She was ruthless as could be, and she had concern for no one other than herself. And that included her son.
Psyche’s family, on the other hand, was there for each other come Hades or high water. (Literally, in the first book.) And it was something Eros couldn’t comprehend. I loved their interactions with Psyche’s family, especially the glimpse of all of them when Hades was around. I am so excited to see what will transpire between Hades and Eros now that they’re brothers-in-law. I think it could make for an interesting alliance and conflict of interest among ‘The Thirteen.’
Demeter’s relationship with her daughters continues to baffle me. It’s clear she loves them, but she’s so quick to offer them up as a sacrifice. Hermes and Dionysus continue to be interesting characters, and I want to know more about them, so I’m glad to see there are so many more books in this series planned.
This is Katee Robert, so I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that the love scenes were scorching. I will anyway, because they were, and isn’t that what we’re all here for? ;) Not to mention, Marriage of Convenience stories rarely work in the present day, but she pulled it off so well here.
One thing that could have made this book more believable for me is if it had been a single point of view from Psyche. A scarred hero plot with a badass present lends itself well to single POV. I want him to remain a mystery, and when you do get his POV and he only ever thinks about the heroine, it’s hard to believe he is who I’m told he is.
Holy smokes - that ending though. Such a cliffhanger of an event in a side story, and I’m sad it’s not the next book. But I guess that means I’ll get to anticipate it for longer! Look - if you’re a fan of the Dark Olympus series, you’re not going to want to miss Electric Idol. It gave us more of a glimpse into the dynamics of Demeter’s family dynamics, and I’m here for that. I love the dysfunction in this series, and I want more!
Book Summary
He was the most beautiful man in Olympus.
And if I wasn't careful, he was going to be my death.
*A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Psyche and Eros that's as sinful as it is sweet.*
In the ultra-modern city of Olympus, there's always a price to pay. Psyche Dimitriou knew she'd have to face Aphrodite's jealous rage eventually, but she never expected her literal heart to be at stake...or for Aphrodite's gorgeous son to be the one ordered to strike the killing blow.
Eros has no problem shedding blood. Raised to be his mother's knife in the dark, he's been conditioned to accept that he's more monster than man. But when it comes time to take out his latest target...he can't do it. Confused by his reaction to Psyche's unexpected kindness, he does the only thing he can think of to keep her safe: he binds her to him, body and soul.
Psyche didn't expect to find herself married to the glittering city's most dangerous killer, but something about Eros wakens a fire inside her she's never felt before. As lines blur and loyalties shift, Psyche realizes Eros might take her heart after all...and she's not sure she can survive the loss.
