Hats off to Carolyn Brown for another classy, classic country tale in BRIDE FOR A DAY. Cassie and Ted make an interesting almost-couple. You see as circumstances had it, these two young adults married in haste. Cassie needed protection and Ted was immediately taken with this sad, scared woman. So Ted did what he could think of at the moment.

As weeks progressed Cassie and Ted, although truly not consummating this fake marriage, were spending a lot of time together. Enough time to get on each other’s nerves it would seem. Ted even spoke to god and asked why his bride was so argumentative. True to Carolyn Brown and her innate sense of love, honor, faith, and humor, BRIDE FOR A DAY seems to have this recipe well memorized.

Cassie hasn’t lived her life with many frills. Life as the daughter of a single mother who waitressed for a living, having only the basics was the norm. Then her mother died, leaving Cassie with a good friend, another waitress who lived with her trucker husband. Cassie was called into duty to tend to the ailing wife, but after her passing, Cassie was going to be left with the husband who was demanding in many ways. So she did the only thing she could, she ran with little to her name. And happened to meet Ted at a bus stop.

Suffice it to say Ted isn’t really what you would envision as a white knight. Ted has a wonderfully close-knit family and has had an amazing support group all his life. So much so that in Cassie’s mind Ted needs to grow up, face his challenges, and most important his grief. Ted is a great guy but has been living in the shadows for several years.

When faced with Cassie’s fears, Ted is forced to gain perspective on how he has been barely coping since his twin brother died. Their conflicts almost always surface when one or the other is reminded of the fragility of life and their own futures. Working together as a team, if not as a truly married couple, might be the answer to a prayer. Coming to grips with their totally unexpected and candidly not welcomed mutual attraction will be the ultimate challenge.

Ted's family takes in Cassie and treats her like the family she always wished for. But Cassie knows this is a temporary respite from her real life. The fear that it will ultimately catch up to her is ever present in her mind.

Carolyn Brown’s stories come from a deep place in her heart and of course creative mind. I often wonder how an author finds a spark of an idea and develops a tale around it. That is exactly what Carolyn Brown does with panache in BRIDE FOR A DAY. Ted and Cassie are amazingly well-developed characters each facing challenges. The story is off the charts with the course of events detailed. You can’t help but join in on the fun and games. And of course, there is a bit of country mixed into the recipe for BRIDE FOR A DAY.

Book Summary

In a modern love story between two strangers, New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown brings small town Texas to life with inimitable sass:

  • A young woman with a talent for trouble
  • An unplanned elopement leads to forever love
  • Irresistible attraction and sizzling chemistry
  • Characters that jump off the page
  • Hurting hearts are healed
  • Authentic Southern voice and setting

Cassie O'Malley is on the run. In a few months her inheritance will kick in. Until then, she just needs a job and a place to stay under the radar. But when Cassie gets off the bus in north Texas and runs smack into the town sheriff, she quickly does the first thing she can think of—approach the handsome stranger on the street and pretend to be a couple. Luckily, the sheriff believes it and the man surprisingly plays along—all the way up to the courthouse, where the officer insists he marry them himself.

Wondering how she got herself into this mess, Cassie can't believe her plan got so far out of hand. Her new husband Ted assures her that his Uncle Ash, a lawyer, will get the whole thing straightened out with no problem. Cassie will only be a bride for a day, and then she can go on her way. But as his family welcomes her with full hearts, she begins to wonder if she'll be able to say goodbye to the first loving family she's known in her life. Not to mention a man like Ted.
