Each autumn I love the appearance of another K-9 Unit series; from the beginnings back in Texas we have travelled to a fair few states, following the adventures of trained police dogs and their handlers, male or female. Now it’s the turn of the ‘Alaska K-9 Unit’ to tell their stories in ALASKAN RESCUE.

This is a series of books by separate authors, who will each divulge some of the central mystery and take us a step on the crime-solving journey, but within each book we find a complete love story and unique dangers.

Ariel Potter is an independent lady, who is an expert on Alaskan Huskies. She lives for sled races and raising sled dogs. Her longtime best friend Violet James has asked Ariel to be her bridesmaid shortly, and the two ladies are on a group mountain hike when matters go badly wrong.

Hunter McCord and his Husky Juneau get a call. The Alaskan State Trooper is needed to join a search and rescue operation. At this point we meet the full team and learn their specialties. One dog tracks in water, another seeks cadavers, and we just know they’ll appear again during the series. Personally, I’m looking forward to the St. Bernard and the Irish Wolfhound. But back to today’s fast-paced story! Juneau tracks Ariel to where she has been shoved over a cliff, but she lodged on shrubs and Hunter is able to rope down and rescue her. All Ariel knows is that she heard a shot fired and had become separated from the group. The others are now missing or dead.

Back at Ariel’s home, which she refers to as a dog kennel the same way others might say a ranch or horse barn, it becomes clear that danger is still following the trainer. Hunter decides to act as security for this witness and victim, which means they are spending time together, and Ariel, unused to company, can’t relax with someone in her space. This is actually quite realistic and anyone who’s been in a similar position will agree.

Expect dogs galore, information about race mushing, threats, and moments of joy with a puppy.  I was happy as a lark while I read. I love the setting, the spread of characters, and intimations as to who can be trusted in our lives. Is it someone who helps us win, or someone who isn’t happy unless they win? As this is a slightly inspirational romance, ALASKAN RESCUE may be enjoyed by anyone from teens to adults. Provided they love dogs.
