In DON'T LOOK NOW a serial killer is on the loose in Texas and it is up to Homicide Detective Jordan Poe and a Texas Ranger named Carter Spencer (mostly known as Ranger) to stop him. The victims all had or have a drug addiction. Jordan's sister, Avery, was attacked two years ago in the same manner. Is it the same killer? Jordan must sink into the world her sister had escaped to get answers but just about the time she feels she has a chance of getting the killer, she is attacked and left nearly blind. It is up to Ranger to finish the job and protect both Avery and Jordan before it is too late.

Ranger isn't one to take over an investigation, but with Jordan's sight compromised he has no choice - but his protective instincts go into overtime when he feels something is missing from all the clues. It looks like the killer has done himself in, hasn't he? So, why does Ranger feel as if something more is about to happen and he will lose Jordan before they can really begin.

DON'T LOOK NOW is an intriguing, chilling mystery. It is the first author Mary Burton I have had the pleasure of reading and it will not be the last. Though, I usually prefer romance in a suspense book this one between Ranger and Jordan didn't quite feel realistic, but they do make a perfectly matched couple.

The danger, drama, police procedurals, dynamic between sisters, co-workers and some ladies of the night fill the pages in this crime story and will pull readers eagerly to the last page. The loss of her sight, though she does regain some as the book moves along, is a fascinating look at what a sighted person, with a specific agenda in life, has to go through to become whole in a police detectives way of thinking.

Though I am usually very good at playing detective while reading a mystery, this one took me a bit longer to get ahead of the author. That still did not ruin DON'T LOOK NOW for me as it was possible I was wrong and Ms. Burton would throw in a twist or two. To be honest I was really surprised that I had gotten the right lead.

Ms. Burton is a very good, very thorough writer and one that might not be for the faint of heart. In DON'T LOOK NOW readers will find very descriptive killings, sexual assaults and a number of graphic scenes of violence. This is still a fantastic read with a different aspect of the lives of cops and a look at what makes a bad guy bad.
