Olivia Naught is on assignment in Las Vegas when she is shot and subsequently suffers from amnesia. Leo Grant, an FBI agent also there on assignment, believes himself to have been the intended target and thus feels responsible for Olivia. When Olivia is relocated to an undisclosed location with around-the-clock surveillance in order to recuperate and allow time for her memory to return, Leo is allowed to accompany her as part of her protection team. He soon realizes that there is much more to Olivia than he originally thought. Leo and Olivia have chemistry and begin to form a bond. Will that bond be strong enough to survive when Olivia remembers who she really is?
A THING DISGUISE, the second book in Catherine Bybee's Richter series, is an extremely well-written romantic suspense novel. As a matter of fact, I would go so far as to say it is one of the best suspense stories I have read to date. The plot is deep and has a lot of twists. It has many elements of a spy novel, yet it is not overly technical or difficult to follow. The action scenes are superbly done. I especially liked the portrayal of camaraderie and friendship that is displayed between those on the team assigned to protect Olivia.
However, there were a few things I didn’t like about the book, based on my personal preferences. First, I thought the language was too rough. Profanity is used a lot in this book, and several of its occurrences are vulgar in nature. Typically, I will stop reading a book once the language gets to be too much, but A THING DISGUISE was so good that I tolerated it much more than I normally would. Secondly, I found the sex scenes to be too graphic for my liking. I tend to read romantic scenes that leave the details to the reader’s imagination. I realize both of these are my personal preferences and other readers might not consider these two things as negatives. I mention them as I appreciate knowing these things when I select novels to read. If it were not for this content, I would definitely read every book this author has written. I otherwise really enjoyed her writing style.
I would recommend this book to the adult reader who enjoys a great suspense novel with a bit of romance added to the mix.
Book Summary
A former gun for hire and a federal agent find themselves on the right side of love but the wrong end of a bullet in this Richter installment from New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee.
On a fateful night in Las Vegas, FBI agent Leo Grant is working on a critical detail in a high-profile child prostitution trial when a beautiful woman jumps into the path of a bullet meant for him. Little does Leo know that the woman is Olivia, an ex-assassin who is seeking redemption one good deed at a time.
One minute, Olivia is lunging in front of Leo on the Vegas Strip. The next, she’s waking up in the hospital in a haze of pain with no memory of her past, her enemies, or even her own name.
With Olivia suffering from memory loss and completely unaware of the danger she is in, it’s up to Leo and Neil MacBain’s team of operatives to keep her safe. With Olivia and Leo both unaware of her past crimes, the two have little reason to avoid their growing attraction. Slowly her past seeps in through the cracks as she struggles to find the answers of who she is. When the veil is lifted and her dark past is staring her down, Olivia must turn her back on Leo and the love she can never allow herself to have, and race to find her would-be killer.
