OUTRAGEOUS is the second book in Minerva Spencer’s “Rebels of the Ton” series. Since reading the first book in this series, I have been eager to read the next installment featuring Eva de Courtney. At the time, Eva seemed like such a fascinating character. In OUTRAGEOUS, Minerva Spencer doesn’t disappoint. Readers should read the previous book before reading this one, because it picks up right where the other one ended, and it establishes some relationships and character motivations. In NOTORIOUS, Godric Fleming appeared to be the de facto villain. In the opening of OUTRAGEOUS, Godric is abducted by Eva and gets a little karmic payback for his shenanigans in the previous book. Excellent! What could be more delicious?
Most of this book is a story set “on the road” or on the run to some degree. Initially, Eva is running away with Godric to prevent him from causing her friends any more trouble, then Godric is turning the tables and essentially running away with Eva, before they are both trying to outwit and outmaneuver a band of shady characters. I don’t always enjoy stories set on the move with the characters’ day-to-day living situation in flux, but I really enjoyed reading OUTRAGEOUS. The characters are everything in this book and make it so entertaining. Because of her mother, Eva has a reputation as rare beauty but who might go mad like her mother. Eva doesn’t bother trying to refute any wrong impressions of her, but it does bug her on some level. A particular sore spot is anybody thinking that any future children she might have could be mad also. With Godric, Eva finds a good verbal sparring partner. The snarky flirtation (my favorite kind) and the sexual tension is something to behold. Because these characters are quick to conceal their deeper feelings, I’m glad that OUTRAGEOUS is told from alternating perspectives so that readers get a better understanding of who they are and how they feel.
OUTRAGEOUS is a thrilling mix of romance and adventure with two dynamic and unforgettable characters. Minerva Spencer does a great job of balancing the romance with the action and adventure. This ending is a satisfying conclusion for the characters and everything they’ve been through. At the very end, there are teases about who future stories could involve. I look forward to Minerva Spencer’s next “Rebels of the Ton” book.
