The Black Jewels series by Anna Bishop has always been one of those series that has intrigued me. Dark and mysterious, it’s chockfull of interesting characters and a shadowy world.

Bishop’s writing turns much more sinister with this series, which I think is a nice touch and it’s very fitting for the Fantasy series. Because it can be so dark, it may be a little too much for some readers. I know in the past, this series has definitely pushed me toward my boundaries, but I always feel intrigued to read the next book in the series when it comes out.

With the darker tone of the series, you do get a lot of the darker characters. I enjoy that but wish there was a little more variation in the characters. Instead of only focusing on the plot, Bishop does a great job with characterization. But if all the characters have that dark secret or tortured past, it can feel slightly repetitive or old sometimes.

Nevertheless, this book is very well written and detailed. I’m sure fans will have no trouble falling deep into this world that Bishop has created and it’s definitely one of the more engaging Fantasy series that I’m reading. I can’t wait to see what Anne Bishop has in store for the Black Jewels series next!
