Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be Jewish in Germany shortly before and during World War II?  Gerhardt Roberts portrays that very horror in his book Safe Harbor. Told throughout the eyes of two Jewish lovers who experienced the terror firsthand, this book will forever affect your view of that awful time in history.

I learned so much from this story about how the Jews came to be so poignantly persecuted during the Holocaust. He also gives a very detailed look inside the Jewish underground and the Jews that became known as U-boats. I knew the Jewish people were terribly treated, but to read the accounts in the story was bone-chilling and very sad. I also had no idea of the degree of destruction in Berlin during the War.

SAFE HARBOR should be a must read for all. It deserves a place on high school reading lists and would make an excellent book for discussion groups.  It is hard to read because of war’s violent nature, but it is a clean book with very few uses of foul language and no sex scenes.

Book Summary

In World War II Berlin, Jews such as Erich Reinhold, who can pass for Aryan, and his sweetheart, Nessa Baumgartner, go underground. In a city where Jewish life is being snuffed out, they soon find themselves in a world of false identification papers and forged ration cards, risking their lives to help others escape to freedom. Safety is a foreign word, danger is everywhere and love is a luxury they can’t afford.

But maybe, in spite of danger and separation, they will find their safe harbor.
