For anyone who knows me, I love reading thrillers particularly when they fall into the psychological sub-genre. It is because of this reason, I couldn't wait to read and review CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45. This was my first introduction into the author's work and she delivered! Unger provides plenty of complex characters, reveals, and action to keep readers on their toes and turning pages.
This novel alternates between multiple points of view, which is not uncommon for me in a novel of this category. However, I will say that very few authors are able to make this element work within their storylines but it wasn't a problem for Unger. Despite the multiple characters involved, the main three for readers are Selena, Graham, and Geneva; Selena is the wife of Graham, who suspects he is cheating on her with their nanny Geneva. Scandalous, right?!
Selena embarks on a mission to uncover the truth, but her quest faces an unexpected hurdle when Geneva suddenly disappears making her suspicions for her husband only grow. It leaves our protagonist questioning more than just her husband's infidelity; could he also be the reason behind her disappearance? With so many doubts piling up and nobody to vent to, Selena finds herself confiding in a female stranger on one of her daily commutes. Will she soon regret confiding in her newly-found confidant? Will Graham be found guilty? Will Geneva be found safe? So many questions to be answered and not enough pages.
If you're like me and need thrillers that are more action-packed than slow-burn, you will not be disappointed in picking this one up. It's a roller-coaster ride until the very end with barely any incidents unresolved.
Overall, CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45 was a delightful read with plenty to savor. My only complaint would be that I wish the author allowed more voice to the supporting characters in the story as it would've helped made the ending stronger, in my opinion. However, this shouldn't deter anyone from grabbing this one and giving it a chance!
Book Summary
From master of suspense Lisa Unger comes a riveting thriller about a chance encounter that unravels a stunning web of lies.
Selena Murphy is commuting home on the train when she strikes up a conversation with a beautiful stranger in the next seat. The woman introduces herself as Martha and soon confesses that she’s been stuck in an affair with her boss. Selena, in turn, confesses that she suspects her husband is sleeping with the nanny. When the train arrives at Selena’s station, the two women part ways, presumably never to meet again.
Then the nanny disappears.
As Selena is pulled into the mystery of what happened, and as the fractures in her marriage grow deeper, she begins to wonder, who was Martha really? But she is hardly prepared for what she’ll discover…
