Selena seems to have it all, but her perfect world is about to unravel. Most people observing Selena’s life will see the ideal ten-year marriage, the nice home, her successful career, and two wonderful children. But Selena knows that her husband, Graham, has lost his job, and has not made any effort to find another. She also knows that he’s incapable of taking care of the boys while she works, requiring them to hire a nanny. And just recently, Selena has observed Graham and the nanny having sex, unaware that she had changed the location of the nanny-cam. As she takes the train home, pondering how to handle Graham’s latest infidelity, the train comes to a halt. Her seatmate, a lovely woman who introduces herself as Martha, produces some airline sized bottles of vodka, which she shares, along with an intimate secret about herself. Surprisingly, Selena confides her own secret about her cheating husband. When the train restarts and Selena departs, she expects to never see the charismatic stranger again. Then she gets a text from Martha, someone she never gave her number, or her full name.

Selena’s own indecision as to how to move forward is put on the back burner, as their nanny, Geneva, has disappeared. Time and time again, the police come back to Selena and Graham, and it’s looking more likely that Graham is a prime suspect. As the police investigation progresses, Martha continues to contact Selena, who is learning more family secrets. Selena’s first love, Will, who she blatantly dumped upon falling for Graham, is now back in the picture. The story proceeds, being told from alternating viewpoints, peeling back the layers of the past, and eventually revealing the shocking connection between Selena, Martha, and Geneva.

CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45 is one of those books which is a true page-turner. This is my first book by Lisa Unger, and I find her writing to be smooth, the story well-plotted and well told, and the mystery captivating. I had to stay up late to finish reading it all in one sitting because there was no way I could attempt to sleep without knowing the outcome. The plot twists make for an exciting read, and I recommend CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45 for fans of mystery and suspense novels.

Book Summary

From master of suspense Lisa Unger comes a riveting thriller about a chance encounter that unravels a stunning web of lies and deceit.

Be careful to whom you tell your darkest secrets…

Selena Murphy is commuting home from her job in the city when the train stalls out on the tracks. She strikes up a conversation with a beautiful stranger in the next seat, and their connection is fast and easy. The woman introduces herself as Martha and confesses that she’s been stuck in an affair with her boss. Selena, in turn, confesses that she suspects her husband is sleeping with the nanny. When the train arrives at Selena’s station, the two women part ways, presumably never to meet again.

But days later, Selena’s nanny disappears.

Soon Selena finds her once-perfect life upended. As she is pulled into the mystery of the missing nanny, and as the fractures in her marriage grow deeper, Selena begins to wonder, who was Martha really? But she is hardly prepared for what she’ll discover.

Expertly plotted and reminiscent of the timeless classic Strangers on a Train, Confessions on the 7:45 is a gripping thriller about the delicate facades we create around our lives.
