Walt Longmire is finally back to Absaroka County, Wyoming, after being away in Mexico settling old scores. When a shepherd is found dead is it thought first to be suicide. Then, Longmire discovers that the dead man has a connection to a powerful and violent family of Basque ranchers. Could it be murder? Among the shepherd's belongings is money coupons from inside Mallo Cup candies and Walt reads this as a message from his spiritual guide Virgil White Buffalo. However, Virgil usually only reaches out to Walt when a child is in danger. . .
As a big fan of the Longmire series was it a great joy reading LAND OF WOLVES by Craig Johnson. Also, as much as I enjoyed reading about Walt and his mission to save his daughter down in Mexico, was I thrilled to have him back in Absaroka County solving murders. Well, a suspected murder. As usual, the writing is on top and I truly enjoyed the investigation as well as the side story about the wolf that has been seen on the Bighorn Mountains. I really hoped that nothing bad would happen to the wolf as I read the book. As for the investigation into the death of the shepherd, it's a tragic story and I don't want to give anything away, but the last part of the story is especially thrilling. Now I'm eagerly waiting to read the next book!
I've read all the books published in this series and I recommend starting from the beginning. Sure, you can read the books as stand-alone. However, it's such a great series that reading them in order will heighten the experience.
