Tarak had been betrayed by his Anasso, King of the Vampires, who wanted to keep him quiet about a secret that the king enjoyed, and sold into prison more than 500 years ago. When he is released, he immediately went after the Mer-man, Riven, who had been the one to imprison him. He had used Tarak, draining him of his essence to build up the magical powers he needed to fool his people and continue as their king. There should have been a very big sign above Tarak's head that said, BEWARE THE DARKNESS because that is all he felt as he searched the swamps to find his enemy.

Waverly, one of the true princesses of the Mer-folk, had tried to ease Tarak's troubles as much as she could during his years of imprisonment, but her life and the life of her sister as well as all of her people were in jeopardy. How could she have imagined that the prisoner would soon hold her heart imprisoned in his very hands? She couldn't possibly abandon her people and only sister to be with the bent on revenge vampire ... could she?

BEWARE THE DARKNESS is one of those books that is an "up all night" read. Tarak and Waverly are amazingly well-written characters. Both have their own agenda, but both want to find the truth and end the reign of terror, and that means eliminating the false ruler.

Readers who read DARKNESS RETURNS will find themselves right where that one ended, but it can be a read-alone book. Styxx, the Anasso (not the one who betrayed Tarak, he took care of him); Inga, the half Ogress half Mermaid who had been tricked into helping Riven and fan favorite (if least favorite of all the vampires) miniature gargoyle Levet play parts in this exciting read. The romantic side of this book is as always excellent, but it was the return of Tarak to his people, whom he felt had sold him out and abandoned him, that is really touching. I was actually teary-eyed as he and Styxx work together to bring him his revenge.

BEWARE THE DARKNESS is a really great read with a surprise and fantastic ending with the Mer-Folk getting a surprise new leader.

Book Summary

The enemy may have changed, but the battle between good and evil burns hotter than ever in this scintillating new installment in Alexandra Ivy's Guardians of Eternity series.

There is only one thing more precious to vampire Tarak than his newfound freedom after five centuries of captivity, and that's the promise of revenge. At last, he can destroy Riven, the merman who has drained his power in order to make himself king. But at the very moment when justice is a fang's breadth away, Tarak's quest is complicated by the beautiful mermaid princess who kept him sane and fed during his ordeal.

Waverly hoped that once Tarak escaped, he'd return to his own kind and enjoy the rest of his immortal life. She also hoped she might one day stop dreaming about the darkly handsome vampire. Instead, Tarak's return draws Waverly into an unlikely alliance—and a passion that eclipses all her fantasies.

Hatred for Riven has sustained Tarak this long. But only Waverly's love can give him the strength to claim eternity with her . . .
