The characters are relatable, realistic, and could easily be your friends. Brooke and Heath have both lost someone close to them but in different ways. Brooke loves ice skating and her brother who is also her best friend. Now he is gone because he killed his best friend and she is lost without him... Heath is the silent strong type, facing the unimaginable loss of his brother who was killed by his best friend. How can they move forward with such big parts of their lives are gone forever?
Brooke comes from a family that the town sees as outcasts but no one hates them more than the family of the boy her brother killed. Johnson takes us for a ride as she writes what it is like to lose a loved one and have to deal with the aftermath of such a horrible crime. While she does not go in-depth with the murder, you get just enough details to make your heart ache for Brooke and Heath.
