Clare's most painful memory is her father taking her younger sister Alice away on a "holiday" and never returning. Now Clare is married to Luke, has two young daughters, and still lives in the home that she grew up in with her mum. Clare is now a lawyer and has recently been made a partner.

After twenty years, Clare's mum receives a letter from Alice. Alice explains how their father has passed away and her stepmother gave her their address. Alice wants to visit and make up for all the time that they have lost. Clare and her mum are thrilled with this news. But once Alice arrives something just doesn't add up. Clare starts to feel that Alice is trying to take over her life; she's dressing like Clare, changes her hair so it looks more like her sister's, and openly flirts with Luke.

As times goes on, Clare suspects Alice is not her long-lost sister. While Luke thinks she is losing her mind, Clare decides to take a trip to America to find out who this person really is. Clare connects with Roma, Alice's stepmother, and they compare notes because she's had her own set of suspicions about her step-daughter. Clare finds out that Alice is really Martha, the friend that she was going to bring with her, but at the last minute only Alice shows up. Along the way, clues and coincidences lead Clare to come to different conclusions. Is Alice really her sister? Why is she trying so hard to reconnect after so years apart? The answers are surprising and more sinister than Clare ever imagines...

What a fantastic story Sue Fortin writes. Two sisters separated when they were young, and meet up again when they are both in their twenties. I never saw the ending of this book coming. Fortin spins such a story, it is hard to believe. I had two sisters, and I hope that if one was taken away, I would know if it was really them when they came back! I can even imagine what it would be like to have this happen. Fortin really gets to the heart of the story when she starts to show how Alice will do anything to get what she wants out of this. Through the entire book, I just couldn't believe the different twist and turns. Get SISTER, SISTER if you love thrillers. I highly recommend this book.
