The characters are non-gendered and welcomed in Shiara where they seem normal. They are unique and well developed. Khya doesn't see how people are treated until she leaves and goes to Ryogo. Cameron writes with such a caring and creative pen that she manages to make something seem normal even though our society has deemed it unnatural. As Khya travels outside of the world she knows, she and her allies learn about new people with interesting new cultures.
SEA OF STRANGERS has a setting that can only be described as breathtaking with buildings and beautiful lands unlike any they have ever seen. There is a magic that is complex and intriguing that only becomes more fascinating as you read along.
The pace of this story is steady with something always happening to hold your attention. As secrets are revealed the characters develop and become even more well-rounded. The journey they take is unlike any other, making you question if and how they will survive.
I found this a fascinating and unique read with creative characters, a beautiful setting, and a plot unlike any other. Even though it is the second book in The Ryogan Chronicles, it can be read as a standalone novel. I feel that you would enjoy and understand the characters better in SEA OF STRANGERS if you did read the first book, ISLAND OF EXILES before.
Book Summary
Know your enemy if you want to survive…
The only way for Khya to get her brother back alive is to kill Varan—the immortal ruler who can’t be killed. But not even Varan knew what he was doing when he perverted magic and humanity to become immortal.
Khya’s leading her group of friends and rebels into the mountains that hold Varan’s secrets, but if risking all their lives is going to be worth it, she has to give up everything else—breaking the spell that holds her brother captive and jeopardizing her deepening relationship with Tessen, the boy who has been by turns her rival and refuge since her brother disappeared. Immortality itself might be her only answer, but if that’s where Khya has to go, she can’t ask Tessen or her friends to follow.
