THE CHILD is an intriguing suspense thriller that takes you on a roller coaster of uncertainties until the very end! Fiona Barton, author of THE WIDOW, left me speechless. Once I started, it was all I could think about, so I had to finish it in a few short days. You never know what secrets people keep, and in THE CHILD, there were three women who each had some themselves. Some of these secrets, I never saw coming!

Journalist Kate Waters hears, like many others in this small London town, of the remains of a small baby that seemed to have been buried for years. They were found when a workman moves debris from a demolished house and notices them. Kate can't stop thinking about the story behind this poor baby. What happened and who is responsible? She decides to look into who the identity of the baby and how it ended up there. In her search for answers from the people who lived on that street, she meets women that each have a story to tell and secrets to keep. What she finds out will be a twist that she did not expect.

All of this suspense makes for an astonishing novel that anyone who loves deep intense storylines will relish. I love how Barton made each chapter from the eyes of each character, which helped you understand what each one was feeling. The emotions can be felt from their perspective as you read through each part leaving you dazed at times. THE CHILD by Fiona Barton is one that you should put on your list to read.

Book Summary

The author of the stunning New York Times bestseller The Widow returns with a brand-new novel of twisting psychological suspense.

As an old house is demolished in a gentrifying section of London, a workman discovers a tiny skeleton, buried for years. For journalist Kate Waters, it’s a story that deserves attention. She cobbles together a piece for her newspaper, but at a loss for answers, she can only pose a question: Who is the Building Site Baby?

As Kate investigates, she unearths connections to a crime that rocked the city decades earlier: A newborn baby was stolen from the maternity ward in a local hospital and was never found. Her heartbroken parents were left devastated by the loss.

But there is more to the story, and Kate is drawn—house by house—into the pasts of the people who once lived in this neighborhood that has given up its greatest mystery. And she soon finds herself the keeper of unexpected secrets that erupt in the lives of three women—and torn between what she can and cannot tell…
