Ten years ago, Ethan Delaney saved Charlene Moreau from a serial killer in the unhallowed graveyard just outside St. Francisville, Louisiana. Both went their separate ways after that fateful night; Ethan back to college, on to the military and now with a special group called Krewe of Hunters at the FBI. Charlie, still in high school at the time, is now a successful actress working back in St. Francisville on a movie. Ethan is also back, at Charlie's beckoning, trying to solve a couple of recent murders. Two men have been murdered two days apart, both wearing Civil War replica uniforms. Charlie finds the second man in the same unhallowed graveyard where Ethan rescued her years ago. It's also where her movie is filming, and ghosts from the Civil War are involved in rescuing her in the movie from an oil baron and senator who are out to kill her. Of course, these are imaginary ghosts, but Charlie and Ethan both have what people in these parts call 'the sight' and can see real ghosts. Can these real ghosts help Ethan and the FBI solve these murders and keep Charlie safe?

DARKEST JOURNEY is just that, a dangerous journey into the past and a dangerous path to travel in the present. Ghosts lurk around every grave marker and also on the riverboat called "Journey," where Charlie's father works as a historian and lecturer. Solving these murder cases takes a number of twists and turns leading to finding the killer. The enticing plot moves steadily along, and the riveting action holds your attention to the very end. The characters are well-developed, strong and realistic, even the ghost characters. Heather Graham brings us suspense at every turn and keeps us guessing as she paints many of the characters as possible suspects. Ms. Graham also throws in a little romance between Ethan and Charlie that promises to blossom into a strong relationship. DARKEST JOURNEY is Ms. Graham's third book in her Krewe of Hunters series. I didn't read the first two, but this book can stand alone, as Ms. Graham does an excellent job of incorporating needed details from the other two stories. If you're not afraid of ghosts, this is a great book to settle down with!

Book Summary

They say it's about the journey, not the destination…

Charlene "Charlie" Moreau is back in St. Francisville, Louisiana, to work on a movie. One night, she stumbles across the body of a Civil War reenactor, the second murdered in two days. Charlie is shocked to learn that her father-a guide on the Journey, a historic paddle wheeler that's sponsoring the reenactment-is a suspect.

Meanwhile, Ethan Delaney, new to the FBI's Krewe of Hunters, is brought in on the case. He and Charlie have a history of their own, dating back to when he rescued her from a graveyard-led there by a Confederate ghost!

Charlie arranges a Mississippi River cruise so she and Ethan can get close to the reenactors, find out who knows what, who has a motive. They discover a lot more as they resume the relationship that ended ten years ago…but might die, along with them, on the Journey.
