Although the Fly By Night series is an offshoot from Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld series, it is very much a stand-alone grouping of books. There is a bridge of sorts between the two series in the crossover novella FLIGHT FROM HELL encapsulating some information about Shimmer and how she ended up Earthside, as well as going into detail on a few things mentioned early in book one of the Fly by Night series (FLIGHT FROM DEATH) but you can begin with FLIGHT FROM DEATH without too much difficulty as Galenorn does a nice job of filling in backstory without bogging down the book.

As much as I enjoy Galenorn's Otherworld series, it does get a tiny bit unwieldy with switching points of view depending on which book you were reading. This series sticks to Shimmer's point of view, and is that much easier to follow.

Galenorn's trademark fully action packed storyline is very much in evidence in FLIGHT FROM MAYHEM, but a strong and very satisfying part of Shimmer's story is her reaction to living within a highly populated city, and her exploration of what it means to have connections with people who care about her. FLIGHT FROM MAYHEM deepens that journey into relationship without sacrificing one iota of excitement. I was engrossed from first page to last, and am eagerly awaiting book three!
