Kelly and her twin Catherine were brought up by single mother. Kelly and Catherine were always together until one day Catherine wanted nothing to do with Kelly. Kelly was a loner in school until Bellamy started attending the same school, and they became close friends, almost like sisters. She started doing things with Bellamy she wouldn't normally have done, and her life became one of drugs, drinking, and sex. She is kicked out of her home, and there are so many secrets Kelly couldn't face them. When she is higher than a kite, she shoots a famous director. Kelly was arrested and spent 15 years in jail. Her only visitor was Shane, Bellamy's younger brother. They develop a bond, and when Kelly is released, they were married.

Kelly could never figure out why Bellamy and her parents wanted nothing to do with her. But once again everything changes. Her father-in- law, another famous director, is shot...the same way Kelly shot the other director. Of course she is the first suspect. Kelly knows that she didn't do it, but Shane thinks she did and tells the police. As things begin to unravel, all the secrets are coming out.

Alison Gaylin books are great. There are so many twists and turns, and secret after secret is revealed. My mind kept going back and forth on WHAT REMAINS OF ME. Who was the real murderer in both cases? Why did Kelly take the fall or did she? WHAT REMAINS OF ME is one of those stories you can't wait to get to the end so you can see how it all plays out.

WHAT REMAINS OF ME is a fast pace book. I would love to see a sequel on this, just to see how Kelly's life went on. Alison Gaylin is right up there with other great mystery writers. I will have to look and find more of her books. I am sure they will be as great as this one. If you are looking for a mystery with a lot of secrets, WHAT REMAINS OF ME is the book for you.

Book Summary

The USA Today bestselling author of the Brenna Spector series returns with her most ambitious book to date, a spellbinding novel of psychological suspense, set in the glamorous, wealthy world of Hollywood —a darkly imaginative and atmospheric tale of revenge and betrayal, presumed guilt and innocence lost, dirty secrets and family ties reminiscent of the bestsellers of Laura Lippman, Gillian Flynn, and Harlan Coben.

Nobody’s perfect. Everybody’s got a drawer somewhere with something hidden in it.

On June 28, 1980—the hottest night of the year—Kelly Michelle Lund shoots and kills Oscar-nominated director John McFadden at a party in his home. . . . And instantly becomes a media sensation, her chilling smile fodder for national nightmares. For years, speculation swirls over the enigmatic seventeen-year-old’s motives, information she’s refused to share. Convicted of the murder, she loses her youth and her freedom—but keeps her secrets to herself.

Thirty years later—and five years after her release from prison—the past has come back to haunt Kelly. Her father-in-law, movie legend Sterling Marshall, is found in a pool of blood in his home in the Hollywood Hills — dead from a shot to the head, just like his old friend John McFadden.

Once again, Kelly is suspected of the high profile murder. But this time, she’s got some unexpected allies who believe she’s innocent —of both killings—and want to help her clear her name. But is she?

Written with masterful precision and control, WHAT REMAINS OF ME brilliantly moves forward and back in time, playing out the murders side by side—interweaving subtle connections and peeling away layers of events to reveal the shocking truth.
