First of all, the hero and heroine pairing could not be any more shocking. Gaius is the Rebel King but Aiken pairs him with Kachka, a Daughter of the Steppes. If you haven't read the previous book in the series, Kachka is Elina's sister. Despite the fact that the both of them were raised together, they have very different world views and personalities. I really enjoyed Kachka's character. She was feisty, strong-willed, and the perfect match for someone like Gaius.
Gaius absolutely blew my socks off. What I loved most about his character was that although he is a king, he is just as likely to jump into battle as his soldiers are. And what gets him even more brownie points is the fact that Annwyl the Bloody calls him a friend. Getting respect from her is a big deal and shows just how much power he has in this world, even if he doesn't wield it.
Aiken also moves forward with the war. Tension is brewing and it's only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose. Tremendous leaps are made in terms of plot and I cannot wait to see what Aiken has in store for her readers next. Each book continues to get better and as the younger characters begin to step up, this already ferocious bunch gets even more menacing.
FEEL THE BURN is a breath of fire in the paranormal romance genre, igniting interest and passion all over again.
Book Summary
War makes strange bedfellows.
I, Gaius Domitus, one-eyed rebel dragon king of the Provinces, know that better than most, since I have to fight off half my ungrateful family on a regular basis to keep law and order here in my lands. But I never expected to have to consort with a barbarian human woman.
Kachka is beautiful, if you like them fierce—and of course I do. But she keeps complaining about how spoiled and decadent I am, and how a feared Daughter of the Steppes has no time for foolish dragons. I think she likes my eye patch, though. It is quite dashing. With death always at our tails, we take our passion like we take our allies. As they say, love the barbarian you’re with…
