A frantic phone call pulls Hunter Galen from his mother's sixtieth birthday party, only to find his business partner, James Nowak, dead in his office. As if on cue, the police walk in moments later and find Hunter holding the gun he found in James' hand. The police don't have enough evidence to hold Hunter, but they sure aren't interested in looking at anyone else.

Hunter hires his long-time private investigator Nate Price to find James' real killer, but gets a two-for-one deal in the process. Nate's cousin, Nicolette Price, has just finished college and obtained her PI license, and she wants to join Nate's PI firm and this investigation. Nicki is from Red Haw, Mississippi and a real back-woods kind of girl here in New Orleans. She's never been to the Big Easy before and is in for some real surprises.

Nicki and Hunter team up to find out who might have offed his partner and why. They discover some unscrupulous business practices and financial improprieties on James' part and also some other improprieties on the part of Hunter's fiancé in the process. Did James Nowak build a house of cards that came crashing down on him? Where will things lead with Nicki and Hunter as they spend time together on this investigation?

MIDNIGHT ON THE MISSISSIPPI will suck you in from the beginning pages and hold you captive for the entire ride. Mary Ellis has created several charming characters and placed them in a delightful setting. She incorporated humor and sarcasm into their dialogue to make this a truly captivating read. I'd put this story somewhere between a cozy mystery and a thriller. It has elements of both, but doesn't sway in either direction entirely.

MIDNIGHT ON THE MISSISSIPPI also has some components of being inspirational, which is very refreshing in this day and time, when writers don't hesitate to tell all in vivid, gory detail. If you like New Orleans, the south, sweet tea and crawfish - with a little murder, deception and subterfuge thrown in - this is a great read for you.

Book Summary

Midnight on the Mississippi begins the new Secrets of the South Mysteries from bestselling author Mary Ellis. These complex crime dramas follow an investigator's quest to make the world a better place...solving one case at a time.

New Orleans--Hunter Galen, a stock and securities broker, suspects his business partner, James Nowak, may be involved in embezzling their clients' money, but he's reluctant to jeopardize their friendship based on suspicion alone. After James turns up dead, Hunter realizes his unwillingness to confront a problem may have cost James his life.

Nicki Price, a newly minted PI, intends to solve the stockbroker's murder, recover the missing millions from the client accounts, and establish herself in the career she adores. As she ferrets out fraud and deception at Galen Investments, Hunter's fiancee, Ashley Menard, rubs Nicki the wrong way. Nicki doesn't trust the ostentatious woman with an agenda longer than the Mississippi River. Ashley seems to be hiding something, but is Nicki's growing attraction to Hunter--a suspected murderer--her true reason for disliking Ashley?

As they encounter sophisticated shell games, blackmail, and murder, Nicki and Hunter's only option is to turn to God as they search for answers, elude lethal danger, and perhaps discover love along the way.
