Lucy Toomey has been working with Tom Ryland for over thirteen years. Working to get him elected to various positions including governor. She is now working to get him elected President of the United States. This has been her life, despite repeated calls from her older sister Alice to come back to Nilson's Bay, Wisconsin and spend some time with her. Lucy and Alice's parents have been deceased for several years. Alice was hurt in an accident when she was eighteen and has been left mentally challenged. Alice still lives in their hometown of Nilson's Bay.
On Election Day, Lucy receives a call that her sister is in the hospital, and she needs to come home immediately. She has to go to her because Alice is frightened of hospitals. Now Lucy is feeling guilty because she shut her phone off the night before and wonders if Alice took the pills on purpose; Alice had a tendency toward depression since her early twenties after a year at college.
Lucy left her hometown five seconds after she graduated high school and has never wanted to go back. She only has bad memories, but when she arrives, it shocks her. She's remembering that not everything was bad and evil about her hometown. The people are real, they care about each other and although they don't embrace her at first, it finally happens. Then there's Peter...
You can't help but care about and fall in love with the people of Nilson's Bay. THE SECOND SISTER is going to pull you right in from the very beginning and never let you go. The banter between Lucy and Peter will have you laughing out loud as it did me. I wish Nilson's Bay truly existed because I would love to live there and be friends with the FOA girls!
THE SECOND SISTER is one of those stories that has you at the edge of your seat wondering what comes next. It also gives you a sense of hope and happiness. The story is strong, but Marie Bostwick weaves a family secret into Lucy's story and the mystery adds just the perfect amount of intrigue. I'd love to read more about Lucy and the people of Nilson's Bay, Wisconsin. I hope THE SECOND SISTER is the beginning of a new series! Marie Bostwick has just become one of my favorite authors!
