Jane is caught up in rectifying mistakes made in the past, both by Leo the head vamp in New Orleans (and the rest of the south east) and by herself. Scenes of poignancy entwine with the now expected and and always well-executed action as Jane kicks butt in all directions.
Jane finds new emotional ground with Beast, with Ricky Bo, with Bruiser and with herself while discovering more pieces of the fractured history of vampires laid down centuries ago yet still effecting the present.
Although it is possible to enjoy DARK HEIR without reading the previous books in the Jane Yellowrock series (Faith Hunter is extraordinarily deft at strewing clues that bring a reader into the know without interrupting the current narrative) I very much recommend reading the books in order. Without that firm grounding in Jane's past it would be difficult if not impossible to fully savor the nuances of the plot.
Faith Hunter has taken a strong series and made it even more compelling, no mean feat when penning book nine! It is rare for me to say so far into a series arc, but DARK HEIR is my favorite Jane book (so far, still plenty of legs left in Jane Yellowrock's world.) The next book up by Faith Hunter is Blood of the Earth the first in a brand new series set in the world of Jane Yellowrock. It features Nell Ingram (from the short story Off the Grid found in the collection Black Water) and more from the PsyLED team. Blood of the Earth will be published in October, 2015.
Book Summary
Shapeshifting skinwalker Jane Yellowrock is the best in the business when it comes to slaying vampires. But her latest fanged foe may be above her pay grade…
For centuries, the extremely powerful and ruthless vampire witches of the European Council have wandered the Earth, controlling governments, fostering war, creating political conflict, and often leaving absolute destruction in their wake. One of the strongest of them is set to create some havoc in the city of New Orleans, and it’s definitely personal.
Jane is tasked with tracking him down. With the help of a tech wiz and an ex-Army ranger, her partners in Yellowrock Securities, she’ll have to put everything on the line, and hope it’s enough. Things are about to get real hard in the Big Easy.
