Lucy Potter is the daughter of a self-made businessman, one who wants his daughter to move into the world of the nobility, the world her mother came from. Lucy wants none of that, but with her father bringing home a new wife, she does want out of the house. A season in Town is the answer.

David, Earl of Wyvern, needs a moneyed wife, but Lucy and her father rejected his anonymous offer. He plans to woo her and wed her, to get his hands on her large dowry. He quickly realizes she's too smart to be a secret smuggler's wife, but his heart won't let her go.

Jo Beverley is an amazing writer, and A SHOCKING DELIGHT is a treat for regular readers and those just discovering her. Beverley's characters are always realistically drawn, and her descriptions immerse you in the world of the Regency.

In A SHOCKING DELIGHT, she brings out the differences between the merchant class and the nobility; even the sections of London they live in are vastly different. Lucy and David also have heated discussions about the freetrade -- smuggling -- and whether it's bad or good for the country. These details make the story and the world more real and relevant. Don't think the historical facts get in the way of the love story; Lucy and David are drawn to each other from their first meeting and the sparks fly every time they're together.

A SHOCKING DELIGHT is part of Jo Beverley's Company of Rogues series. This book stands alone, but those familiar with the previous books will enjoy seeing those characters again. I recommend A SHOCKING DELIGHT for fans of historical romances that feature strong and intelligent heroes and heroines.

Book Summary

From five-time RITA Award winner Jo Beverley comes an exciting new Regency romance in which a lady must risk all to win love.

The man she shouldn’t want. The woman he shouldn’t marry...

David Kerslake, smuggling master from The Dragon's Bride, is now Earl of Wyvern and must survive the ton as well as the Preventive Officers.

Lucy Potter, daughter of a wealthy merchant, is more interested in trade than in the men after her dowry. When forced to have a London season, she sets out to enjoy herself rather than to find a husband. But once she meets the notorious Earl of Wyvern, her resolve weakens, and when they kiss, it dissolves—even though her instincts warn he’s dangerous.

Wyvern has a dark secret, which means he must win a rich bride. Lucinda Potter seems ideal. Not for her beauty and her lively charm, but because at first meeting she seems unlikely to realize the truth.

As he comes to know her, however, as they spar and kiss, he realizes she’s too clever and honest by far. Marrying Lucy would mean living a lie with the woman he has come to love....
