Eric Parrish has been Chief of the Psychiatric Unit at Havemeyer General Hospital in Philadelphia for fifteen years. He is very good at his job; not so good in his private life. He is in the middle of a divorce that he does not want; he and Caitlin married right out of college and have one child, seven year old Hannah.
Eric consults with an elderly cancer patient, Virginia Teichner about her seventeen year old grandson, Max Jakubowski, her primary caregiver. Max is concerned that his "Gummy" doesn't eat, and thinks she's depressed. Mrs. Teichner confides that she isn't depressed; she is worried what will happen to Max when she passes; his father walked away years ago and his mother is an alcoholic. Eric agrees to counsel Max at his office he has for private patients. After Virginia dies, Max goes completely off the grid, and Eric tries to find him by using people Max talked about in private. This is the sociopath's cue to start Eric's personal life and his career plummeting. Eric's divorce turns nasty; he is the prime suspect in the killing of a young girl; and, he is being sued for sexual harassment by one of the Interns on his staff. Max shows up, finally, and believes the worst about his mentor, which is another low blow for Eric. Who could be doing this to Eric, and why?
Lisa Scottolini superbly balances emotion and suspense into EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES and presents the reader with a totally fascinating, macabre, and darkly exciting tale. Eric is a fully resolved character going up against believable situations. The supporting characters are skillfully and richly imagined personae and are germane and spot on to this tale. EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES is a riveting page-turner penned by a master storyteller.
Book Summary
Dr. Eric Parrish is the Chief of the Psychiatric Unit at Havemeyer General Hospital outside of Philadelphia. Recently separated from his wife Alice, he is doing his best as a single Dad to his seven-year-old daughter Hannah. His work seems to be going better than his home life, however. His unit at the hospital has just been named number two in the country and Eric has a devoted staff of doctors and nurses who are as caring as Eric is. But when he takes on a new patient, Eric's entire world begins to crumble.
Seventeen-year-old Max has a terminally ill grandmother and is having trouble handling it. That, plus his OCD and violent thoughts about a girl he likes makes Eric a high risk patient. Max can't turn off the mental rituals he needs to perform every fifteen minutes that keep him calm. With the pressure mounting, Max just might reach the breaking point. When the girl is found murdered, Max is nowhere to be found. Worried about Max, Eric goes looking for him and puts himself in danger of being seen as a "person of interest" himself. Next, one of his own staff turns on him in a trumped up charge of sexual harassment.
Is this chaos all random? Or is someone systematically trying to destroy Eric's life? New York Times best selling author Lisa Scottoline's visceral thriller, Every Fifteen Minutes, brings you into the grip of a true sociopath and shows you how, in the quest to survive such ruthlessness, every minute counts.
