The time is 1939 and Danielle Bretancourt von Hoffman and her husband, German born, Max, are aboard the Newell-Grey Explorer, a luxury liner headng to England. They sailed to New York several weeks ago to finalize plans for moving there and are anxious to return to Poland to reunite with their six year old son, Nick who had been left in his grandmother's care.

Jonathan Newell-Grey, heir apparent to the British shipping line that bears his name befriends Danielle and Max and they become good friends. He helps them in New York to select a proper neighborhood to live, introduces them to his banker and offers any future assistance they might need. Now on their way to England, and then on to Poland, Jon tries to calm Danielle after she hears the news that Germany has invaded Poland. When the Germans sink the ship, Danielle knows her life as she knows it will never be the same.

SCENT OF TRIUMPH is a sweeping saga about family, passions and perfume during World War II. We travel to England, France, Poland and Hollywood. Jan Moran does a wonderful job of weaving the scents and smells into the fabric of this story about hope, loss, and finally triumph. At the beginning of each chapter is a short detail from the perfume journal of Danielle Bretencourt that I found charming and informative She says, "perfume is my memory, the chronicle of my life." As a lover of flowers, scents and perfumes to me this was a very special addition to this lovely book.

SCENT OF TRIUMPH tackles the terrifying atrocities of World War II, as well as the social and economic realities of that time in history. It focuses on love, family, courage, and perseverance while determination to succeed is always the goal. Danielle faces her fears. When Max is killed, she gathers the courage to take a risk in a new country. She must survive and protect her mother, her daughter and her niece while with he help of her creativity, artistry, fierce determination, sometimes hardheadedness, Danielle forges ahead to begin her successful future and finally her dynasty. She settles in Hollyood, introduces her distinctive perfume, and begins to design clothing. Romance faces her on not one but two fronts. Danielle has visions for a happy future but must find her son, Nick, first.

I loved SCENT OF TRIUMPH and could not put it down. Happy endings are always my favorite and Danielle deserved one. Jon was my favorite character. He proved to be a best friend to Max promising to watch over Danielle. His assisting at the birth of her daughter, Jasmine, was sweet Although his timing was never right, he perseveres and in the ends he wins. I like the writing style of Jan Moran very much and look forward to her next book. Ms. Moran you have a new and dedicated fan.
