"Will memories of the past help Fin Mcleod solve a murder in his home village?"

Edinburgh Detective Fin Mcleod's life is falling apart when his job forces him to return back to work. A murder has occurred in his home village that bears a similar MO to a murder Fin investigated months earlier. The victim, Angus Macritchie, is someone Fin knows all too well. Will Fin's memories of his childhood aid in finding a killer? And is there a connection between the murders?

THE BLACKHOUSE is the first book in a trilogy featuring Fin Mcleod. The story is told through flashbacks to Fin's childhood as Peter May seamlessly weaves back and forth between the past and present. I like seeing the different viewpoints on the characters as we get glimpses of the events that have shaped them into the adults Fin now sees. However, it is the setting itself that truly takes my breath away in THE BLACKHOUSE! Peter May paints a grim, dark portrait of poverty and the clash of cultures. The differences between the tiny village of Crobost and the mainland of Scotland are sharply drawn as we see how the culture and relationships are so closely intertwined on the Isle of Lewis. I particularly like the whole concept of the guga harvesting and its impact on the overall culture of the island.

THE BLACKHOUSE is an introspective mystery that delves into the hearts and loves of mankind. Grief is a central theme of the story but there is still a glimmer of hope that permeates even the darkest moments. I thoroughly enjoyed THE BLACKHOUSE and look forward to reading the rest of Peter May's trilogy!

Book Summary

From acclaimed author and television dramatist Peter May comes the first book in the Lewis Trilogy--a riveting mystery series set on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, a formidable and forbidding world where tradition rules and people adhere to ancient ways of life. When a grisly murder occurs on the Isle of Lewis that has the hallmarks of a killing he's investigating on the mainland, Edinburgh detective and native islander Fin Macleod is dispatched to see if the two deaths are connected. His return after nearly two decades not only represents a police investigation, but a voyage into his own troubled past. As Fin reconnects with the places and people of his tortured childhood, he feels the island once again asserting its grip on his psyche. And every step forward in solving the murder takes him closer to a dangerous confrontation with the tragic events of the past that shaped--and nearly destroyed--Fin's life. The Blackhouse is a thriller of rare power and vision that explores the darkest recesses of the soul.
