CAPTIVE picks up right where the first book, Pawn, left off. It's not necessary to read the first book in The Blackcoat Rebellion series in order to enjoy CAPTIVE as Aimée Carter provides the reader with a general overview of the story. However, I can't imagine why anyone would miss out on a single moment of this stunningly good dystopian series!
I can't rave enough about Aimée Carter's world building! CAPTIVE held me captive from the very first page. CAPTIVE is darker than the first book as we begin to delve into the hidden aspects of Aimée Carter's world. We fully explore the horror of Elsewhere, a sort of dumping ground for the unwanted residents of the world. We saw a taste of it in Pawn, but Elsewhere is much worse than I ever imagined. CAPTIVE contains one particular scene that encapsulates the horrors of Elsewhere and what the desperate bid to survive can cost others as Aimée Carter does a marvelous job at showing how power and the desire to move up in the world can corrupt at any level.
CAPTIVE is a dark, disturbing, but oh-so-compelling entry into the dystopian young adult genre. Aimée Carter has some twistedly clever surprises in store for the reader in CAPTIVE and I can't wait to see how she concludes The Blackcoat Rebellion series! CAPTIVE is one of the best dystopian young adult books I've read this year, and perhaps ever. I highly recommend CAPTIVE and The Blackcoat Rebellion series!
Book Summary
For the past two months, Kitty Doe's life has been a lie. Forced to impersonate the Prime Minister's niece, her frustration grows as her trust in her fake fiancé cracks, her real boyfriend is forbidden and the Blackcoats keep her in the dark more than ever.
But in the midst of discovering that her role in the Hart family may not be as coincidental as she thought, she's accused of treason and is forced to face her greatest fear: Elsewhere. A prison where no one can escape.
As one shocking revelation leads to the next, Kitty learns the hard way that she can trust no one, not even the people she thought were on her side. With her back against the wall, Kitty wants to believe she'll do whatever it takes to support the rebellion she believes in—but is she prepared to pay the ultimate price?
