As you delve into the story and live past and present lives of the characters you are drawn into their pain. It is written in a way that you understand what they are doing and why even if you don't always agree with them.

Mist is so driven to save humanity and Loki is only driven by his selfish greed as is Freya. There is no doubt that you will root for them to win in the second book of the series, Midgard. Though BLACK ICE is the second book it can be read as a standalone, but you might enjoy getting more background by reading the first. There should be many more great stories to come in the series by Susan Kinard.
