This readable and well-written fantasy brings village folks to life as convincingly as kings and dragons. Young Ig grows up speaking to seabirds and learning the dragon tongue; he later trains as a bard to pick up songs and more dragon lore. This unusual hero travels the land with a lute to sing for his supper, meeting witches, sea serpents, and princesses. Eventually the return of a huge black dragon bent on destruction threatens to destroy everything he has ever known. Could Ig find some way to avert disaster where knights have failed?
While fantasy lovers of any age should be delighted with the story by Jennifer Garlen, an American Professor of English, I also class it as Young Adult as the tale is suitable for teen readers and we meet some well characterised young people. For a coming of age fantasy adventure with an unusual twist, I highly recommend this e-book WIERM'S EGG and I look forward to reading more from Jennifer Garlen in the future.
Book Summary
When the green dragon Sylla discovers an orphaned human baby, she adopts him and raises him as her own. Wiermig grows up a child of two worlds, but the dragons are a dying race whose existence has been forgotten by men. Wiermig fulfills the expectations of the elder wierms by following the path of a fledgling dragon, first traveling the land with his uncle in disguise and then setting out on his own to learn his destiny from the Seeker in the Deep. Along the way he encounters demons, witches, and pirates as well as dragons, each with a part to play in changing Wiermig's life.
The past returns to shape the future when Erozur, the black dragon who devastated Weshura in an ancient war, resumes his bloody campaign against wierms and men. Wiermig, now a young bard, embarks on a dangerous journey to defeat Erozur, not with swords or strength, but with the knowledge he possesses and a powerful relic left by a long dead champion from the past.
