Thirteen year old, Ava Cooper, only wanted to save her best friend, Wash. She succeeded... but in the process became an instant media phenomenon. Wash was injured after a stunt plane crashed. Miraculously, Ava healed his injury with only a touch. Everyone wants Ava to heal them now... but is her ability destroying Ava? How will her friends and family handle this newfound fame?

THE WONDER OF ALL THINGS is a thought provoking novel about sacrifice and moral responsibility. Ava is immediately dubbed "The Miracle Child" by the news media and many believe she has an obligation to use her healing powers, no matter the personal cost. Jason Mott deftly addresses this multifaceted issue, ultimately letting the reader decide which answer is the most correct.

The relationships in THE WONDER OF ALL THINGS are critical to the success of the story. In particular, the friendship between Ava and Wash is beautifully done as I love seeing these two teenagers bond even further as they face heart-wrenching situations. The side story involving Reverend Brown offers a nice contrast to Macon's relationship with his daughter, as we see how love and personal motivation can clash.

THE WONDER OF ALL THINGS would be an ideal selection for a book club as it asks the reader to look past the obvious. Jason Mott delves into some very sensitive issues as his characters have all experienced trauma and each copes in a very different way. Ava's mysterious power is perceived by many as a "magic pill" for all that ails them and the resulting events will forever shake up the tiny town of Stone Temple, NC.

Book Summary

On an ordinary day, at an air show like that in any small town across the country, a plane crashes into a crowd of spectators, killing and injuring dozens. But when the dust clears, a thirteen-year-old girl named Ava is found huddled beneath a pocket of rubble with her best friend, Wash. He is injured and bleeding, and when Ava places her hands over him, his wounds miraculously disappear.

Ava has a unique gift: she can heal others of their physical ailments. Until the air show tragedy, her gift was a secret. But now the whole world knows, and suddenly Ava is thrust into the spotlight. People from all over the globe begin flocking to her small town, looking for healing and eager to glimpse the wonder of a miracle. But Ava's unusual ability comes at a great cost—her own health—and as she grows weaker with each healing, Ava begins searching for an escape. Wash agrees to help Ava, but little does she know he has his own secret he's been harboring, and soon Ava finds herself having to decide just how much she's willing to sacrifice in order to save the one she loves most.
