Peter Diamond has a tough mystery to solve. Someone killed a professor who was bidding on a carved stone. However, this stone is not just any stone but the Chaucer's Wife of Bath. Which must have some importance for the professor to be shot during a robbery and the thieves run off without the stone. During this investigation the Stone Wife as it is called is moved to police headquarters in Diamond's office of all places. Diamond and his team have to find out all they can of this stone as well as Chaucer. This mystery leads another investigator to go undercover to a whole different world than what Diamond is investigating in my opinion. Ingeborg has to find out where the source of the handgun used in the robbery came from. That investigation itself had me on pins and needles until I finished the book.

THE STONE WIFE written by Peter Lovesey is a beautifully written novel that catches you from the very beginning. I love how it does not tell just one side of the story, but several. The effect of having more than one character that you follow along in this detective case wrapped around an ancient stone, known as the famous Stone Wife, keeps you engaged in the storyline. With such lively characters you are pulled into the novel from the very beginning wondering along with their thoughts and feeling their emotions.

THE STONE WIFE is my first Peter Diamond novel from the series and it is easy to get hooked. Without any prior knowledge of the storyline with Diamond and his crew, it is not hard to keep up. Though there is some heart stopping scenes for me, putting The Stone Wife down for any length of time is not an option... once you start it you have to finish.

Book Summary

Book 14 in the Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond series, one of Soho's bestselling and most critically acclaimed series, this time including a Chauceresque twist.

At a Bath auction house, a large slab of carved stone is up for sale. At the height of what turns into very competitive bidding, there is a hold-up attempt by three masked robbers. They shoot and kill the highest bidder, a professor who has recognized the female figure carved in the stone as Chaucer’s Wife of Bath. The masked would-be thieves flee, leaving the stone behind.

Peter Diamond and his team are assigned to investigate, and the stone is moved into Diamond’s office so he can research its origins. The carving causes such difficulties that he starts to think it has jinxed him. Meanwhile, as Diamond’s leads take him to Chaucer’s house in Somerset, his intrepid colleague Ingeborg goes undercover to try to track down the source of the handgun used in the murder.
