Lydia longs to be a woman of the world and refuses to settle down and marry. But when she gets blackmailed for something she had written years ago, she finds herself in a compromising position when she tries to stop the blackmailer. Her savior is Lord Penthurst, and now she finds herself compromised in a whole new fashion.

THE ACCIDENTAL DUCHESS is an entertaining romance with memorable characters. Lydia wants to be a woman of the world, and will do anything to find excitement in her life. She longs to be different from other society ladies, and often finds herself in trouble. She's stubborn and spontaneous and readers will find her need to be unique endearing. Penthurst is witty and protective - he's also loyal to his family and enjoys his freedom as a duke. Lydia and Penthurst show a good amount of character growth towards the end -- realizing what they have given up, but also seeing the joys of what they have.

The secondary characters are wonderfully written. Penthurst's Aunt Rosalyn is feisty, and opinionated. She tells people exactly what she thinks of them and isn't afraid to stir up trouble. The dialogue between Penthurst and Rosalyn and Lydia and Rosalyn is well written and comical. The villain is shady yet somewhat dim, and the ending plot twists will surprise readers. The trust between Lydia and Penthurst makes the romance all the more titillating.

Madeline Hunter has given readers a provocative story with irresistible characters. THE ACCIDENTAL DUCHESS is a must read for any regency fan.

Book Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Madeline Hunter comes this seductive tale of a headstrong young lady, a scandalous manuscript, and the iron-willed duke determined to save her from her ruin. For fans of Mary Balogh, Eloisa James, and Julia Quinn.

When Lady Lydia Alfreton is blackmailed over the shocking contents of a manuscript she once wrote, she must go to the most desperate of measures to raise the money to buy back the ill-considered prose: agreeing to an old wager posed by the arrogant, dangerous Duke of Penthurst. At least Penthurst is a man she wouldn’t mind fleecing—and she’s confident she’ll win.

Penthurst long ago concluded Lydia was a woman in search of ruinous adventure, but even he is surprised when she arrives at his house ready to bet her innocence against his ten thousand pounds—a wager he only proposed to warn her off gambling.

When she loses to a simple draw of the cards, Lydia is shocked. Now, her problems are twofold: a blackmailer determined to see her pay and a duke determined to tame her rebellious ways. One misstep and Lydia could find herself ruined—or bound to the seductive man who would make her his duchess.
