ENSLAVED BY THE OTHERS leaps right back into the ongoing story of Shiarra where the last book's cliffhanger left her, as a captive of Max Carlyle, the evil vampire master who would like to conquer North America. Shiarra is held and tortured in the cruel captivity of Max's lair, where she tries unsuccessfully to get away several times before finally escaping out a skylight.

Alec Royce, the master vampire of New York, and her recent lover, is trying to avoid the political fallout of being visibly involved in her rescue. Royce sends a shape-shifting associate to pick her up, and then some of Royce's vampires arrive to help Shiarra rescue her best friend Sara who is still being held by Max. A pitched battle erupts during the rescue between Max and his minions and Shiarra with her motley group of shapeshifter, wizard, and vampires.

Shiarra is mostly human, although she has contracted some Other-taint in her blood, partly vampire and partly werewolf. She has a massive fear of Others, but through her job as a private investigator as well as through her own foolhardiness, she keeps winding up in dangerous situations with Others, trying to oppose them and save humans from their machinations. She is finally coming to the realization that her own "terrible life-choices" are a large part of the problem. In talking with Gideon, a necromancer and temporary ally, she describes her behavior as bad decisions, smart-ass responses, and a martyrdom complex.

ENSLAVED BY THE OTHERS contains nonstop action, backed up by a lot of snappy wit and snarky dialogue. Shiarra's budding self-awareness keeps her from being too stupid to live but allows her to continue to fall into one wacky situation after the next, providing a breakneck race of thrills and adventure. I love this H&W Investigations series, and am already salivating for the next release in the bunch. Jess Haines does not disappoint! Readers will achieve the greatest enjoyment by reading the previous books in order before tackling ENSLAVED BY THE OTHERS, book 6.
