The word "wow" hardly begins to describe what I feel after reading UNINVITED. Though I have loved, seriously loved, many, many books this year (though it is still early in the year), none have left me with the same breathless rush UNINVITED has. Sophie Jordan has done an exceptional job with her latest YA novel.
Though I could probably write pages and pages on the surprising detail, superb plot sequence, and the all-around devouring pace of this novel, two strong elements specifically appeal to me. One is the love interest, Sean. He is without a doubt on my list of favorite love interests. He is mysterious, sexy, and one of the deepest and well-developed characters I know. The mystery about him is revealed to the reader just as it is to Davy, and it is great seeing that through her eyes. I love the chemistry between them, and the complete sincerity they show soars off the page and into your heart. I hope that there is another book to come, because I am in no way ready to leave his and Davy's relationship.
The second thing that really struck me is the thought-provoking element to UNINVITED. Many books appeal to many readers in different ways, but the strongest question UNINVITED left me with is about what defines you. In UNINVITED, those with the killer gene are often branded and always ostracized. Davy's struggle to see past their label which soon becomes hers is remarkable and eye-opening. It truly makes you consider how you define someone and where you place them in your world.
Overall, I found this book to be absolutely brilliant, shocking, and delicious. For YA readers of any kind, I can't recommend this enough.
Book Summary
From New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan, Uninvited is a chilling and suspenseful story about a girl whose DNA brands her as a killer, perfect for fans of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and Confessions of a Murder Suspect.
Davy had everything—a terrific boyfriend, the homecoming crown, a bright future at Juilliard—but when her genetic tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome, she loses it all. Uninvited from her prestigious school and avoided by her friends and family, she is placed in a special class with other "carriers" who are treated like the murderers they someday might become.
Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life and tells her that she alone controls her actions—not the code embedded in her DNA. But even if she can learn to trust him, can Davy trust herself?
