A SPARK UNSEEN takes place about two years after the ending of THE DARK UNWINDING. What I love about that gap is that you see how truly consistent Katharine's character is. During that time with Lane away, she received word he was dead, but she doesn't let that bring her down. She holds hope and an energy to do something. That, combined with her unorthodox elegance, reminds me in this sequel why I love her character so much.
The change of setting to France is appropriate and above all, exciting and different. Sharon Cameron captures the change perfectly uses it to create surprising twists in the plot that I didn't see coming. While I feel the first book, THE DARK UNWINDING, focuses on the growth of Katharine as a character, A SPARK UNSEEN now takes that changed and matured young woman and gives her a mission and something to protect. The new characters introduced are hilarious in some cases and highly suspicious in others. My only real issue with the book is how quickly Katharine is to work with a new French man after her betrayal in THE DARK UNWINDING. However, that did not stop me from loving the story or getting heavily discouraged with her character. It is just something I wish was a little different.
If you enjoyed the first book, I highly suggest reading the sequel. It is even more intense than the first, and there is no shortage of action and excellent plot. It captures you just as well, if even a little more so, than the first, and contains an ending that is both open and closed enough to leave you feeling very satisfied.
