Lanore is once again alone in the world and grieving the loss of her companion. Little by little she realizes through the haze of sorrow that the nightmares are not subsiding but are instead increasing in intensity. What if Jonathan truly is held captive by the Queen of the Underworld? Can Lanore live with herself if Jonathan is being endlessly tortured? Only one person can help her... but it will require her finding and asking the mercurial Adair for a favor. Will Lanore risk the very freedom she has fought for in order to save Jonathan?
THE DESCENT is the third book in a series and this is a series that absolutely must be read in order. The character development and world building have been carefully crafted over the course of the series to bring us to this phenomenal conclusion to the trilogy. The sheer brilliance of THE DESCENT will be somewhat dimmed if one hasn't read just how cleverly Alma Katsu has shaped her world as THE DESCENT makes me want to reread the entire series all over again in light of the new information.
THE DESCENT just blows me away with the beauty and creativity of the world building and how the characters fit into the world. I have to admit that it was only the lyrical writing style of Alma Katsu that kept me reading past the first book, THE TAKER, as Adair's brutality was hard to stomach. However, THE DESCENT pulls it all together and brings the story full circle so that we truly can understand the characters and their motivations. It's brilliant!
THE DESCENT is a masterful conclusion to what may be one of the best trilogies I've ever read. Alma Katsu's lyrical writing style makes The Taker trilogy one of those series that lingers in your mind long after you have finished reading it. I only hope we see more stories in her magical world, particularly one about that oh so mysterious island Adair was living on. THE DESCENT is highly recommended!
Book Summary
The final installment in the “mesmerizing” (Booklist, starred review) and addictive trilogy—find out who truly holds the key to Lanny’s heart and whether she’ll be reunited with her beloved in this gripping supernatural tale of magic, lust, and longing.
Lanore McIlvrae has been on the run from Adair for hundreds of years, dismayed by his mysterious powers and afraid of his
violent—even murderous—temper. She betrayed Adair’s trust and imprisoned him behind a stone wall to save Jonathan, the love of her life. When Adair was freed 200 years later, she was sure that he would find her and make her existence a living hell. But things turned out far different than she’d imagined.
Four years later, Lanore has tracked Adair to his mystical island home, where he has been living in self-imposed exile, to ask for a favor. She wants Adair to send her to the hereafter so she may beg the Queen of the Underworld to release Jonathan, whom she has been keeping as her consort. Will Lanore honor her promise to Adair to return? Or is her intention to reunite with Jonathan at any cost?
Of all the forces of the universe, the most mysterious, confounding, and humbling is the power of love. The epic story of love and loss, magic and destiny that began with The Taker and sparked a chase around the world in The Reckoning comes to a surprising conclusion with The Descent.
