V WARS: A CHRONICLE OF THE VAMPIRE WARS is a fascinating compilation of alternating viewpoints of the war, both the prelude to and the actual start of the rumbles between the humans and the various vampires/werewolves. The tales don't intertwine, as we visit paranoid bikers with Nancy Holder, a talk show host with John Everson, a Native American with Yvonne Navarro, a politician with Keith R.A. DeCandido, a rural farmer with Scott Nicholson, an expedition to Antarctica with Gregory Frost, and a mob enforcer with James A. Moore. Jonathan Maberry's scenes featuring the first known occurrence, Patient Zero, tie the various snippets together by adding a sense of continuity. The brilliance of this anthology is that the stories, while centered on the common theme of the war, continue throughout the storyline as we revisit some of the same characters as the war rhetoric progresses.
The character development in V WARS is superb. Even unlikable characters, such as John Emerson's Danika Dubov, evoke sympathy from the reader as events spiral out of their control due to their very own DNA. And who can't help but love DeCandido's Big Charlie?
V WARS is nothing short of stunning! The unique approach to vampire legends coupled with the excellent storytelling skills by some very talented authors makes for a perfect blend. V WARS is a book I'll be recommending over and over again.
Book Summary
A sweeping, threaded narrative of the global phenomenon known as the Vampire Wars! Mankind is silently infected by a millennia-old bacteria unknowingly exhumed by a scientific expedition in Antarctica. Now, in some rare cases, a person's so-called "junk DNA" becomes activated, and depending on their racial and ethnic heritage they begin to manifest one of the many diverse forms of the "others" that are the true basis for the legends of supernatural creatures. These aren't your usual vampires and werewolves - it goes much deeper than that. Conceived by Jonathan Maberry, V Wars features stories from various "frontlines" as reported by such contributors as Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro, James A. Moore, Gregory Frost, John Everson, Keith R.A. DeCandido, and Scott Nicholson (as well as Maberry himself, of course). The result is a compelling series of tales that create a unique chronicle of mankind's response to this sudden, hidden threat to humanity.
