Partnered with Cody Fairfax, sexy loner werewolf and Daisy's longtime crush, Daisy and Cody discover they've stumbled onto something more sinister than the death of a college student. With different factions of the supernatural getting involved, including a sexy ghoul named Stefen whose allegiance is questionable, Daisy has plenty of leads but no answers. There's more than the town's tourism industry at stake. If this mystery isn't solved soon, it may end up being disastrous for Daisy.
Having never read any of Jacqueline Carey's previous books, I came into DARK CURRENTS with no expectations. I've heard a lot of great things about Carey's previous works but never got around to reading any of her highly acclaimed novels. After reading DARK CURRENTS, I understand why people speak about her books in absolute reverence. Carey takes the time to really flesh out her story. She builds up her world and multi-faceted characters at a comfortable pace, slowly evoking imagery and emotions. No doubt this is a master storyteller who was born to write. Romance is by no means a focus but there is a touch of it to keep things interesting. One of the things I loved is all the movie references throughout the book which brought some great humor to the story. Now that I have gotten a dose of Carey's talents, I am hooked. If you are looking for an exceptionally written, original urban fantasy which includes a complex mystery involving the supernatural, DARK CURRENTS will fulfill all your reading requirements and more. I just became a fangirl.
Book Summary
The Midwestern resort town of Pemkowet boasts a diverse population: eccentric locals, wealthy summer people, and tourists by the busload—not to mention fairies, sprites, vampires, naiads, ogres, and a whole host of eldritch folk, presided over by Hel, a reclusive Norse goddess. To Daisy Johanssen, fathered by an incubus and raised by a single mother, it’s home. And as Hel’s enforcer and the designated liaison to the Pemkowet Police Department, it’s up to her to ensure relations between the mundane and eldritch communities run smoothly. But when a young man from a nearby college drowns—and signs point to eldritch involvement—the town’s booming paranormal tourism trade is at stake. Teamed up with her childhood crush, Officer Cody Fairfax, a sexy werewolf on the down- low, Daisy must solve the crime—and keep a tight rein on the darker side of her nature. For if she’s ever tempted to invoke her demonic birthright, it could accidentally unleash nothing less than Armageddon.
