Ex-Detroit cop Alex McKnight is living a quiet life in Paradise, Michigan, since leaving the force after the death of his partner and surviving being shot himself. One of his closest friends is concerned that Alex is becoming almost reclusive, so he forces Alex to attend a card game at the home of an affluent neighbor. Alex knew he should have stayed home, especially when the game is interrupted by three masked gunmen intent on robbing the safe while trashing only one room of the house.

Things go from bad to worse when Alex and his friends at the game become the main suspects for the robbery. As items from the heist are found in their homes or businesses, it is apparent someone is setting them up, but for what reason? Of course, Alex must do whatever he can to save himself and his friends, no matter the consequences, which turn out to be quite extensive -- and life-threatening.

One of the paragraphs near the end of NORTH OF NOWHERE sums it up perfectly: This is what the whole summer had come down to. This summer of secrets. The biggest secret of all was what a bag full of money could make a man do. Steve Hamilton is adept at developing suspenseful storylines with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers anticipating the outcome. NORTH OF NOWHERE is no exception and another great addition to his Alex McKnight series.

Book Summary

In NORTH OF NOWHERE, Steve Hamilton returns to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where former Detroit cop Alex McKnight has learned that wherever money goes, envy is not far behind.

After a game of cards turns into a professional heist, Alex McKnight finds himself lying facedown on the floor with a gun to the back of his head. When the dust settles, McKnight is one of the police chief’s lead suspects. Worse, one of the other card players has the same idea, and he has no qualms about exercising some vigilante justice of his own. Now, Alex knows he is the only one who can uncover the truth. But he is about to discover how dark this conspiracy truly is, or how close to guilt he actually stands. . .
