Deciding to make an end of it, Ben heads down to the newspaper office to confront the editor. But the man he expects turns out not to be as he expected. Instead, he comes face to face with none other than the lovely Evangeline Ramsey -- a lovely lady Ben had asked to marry in his youth and she had turned him down. Now, what was she up to?
Despite Evie's pleas, Ben is determined to shut the paper down and he seeks to buy it from Evie's father. What can Evie do to stop him? More is at stake than just the news! People are depending on her to help them and how can she do this without the paper?
Almost worn out from trying to keep food on the table and to save the family from falling on even further hard times, Evie has taken control over the paper when her father's gambling and poor health take their effect. Yes, Ben can still make her heart beat faster, but she vowed never to trust a man so inclined to wild romances and high stakes gambling! Now, what will happen?
Well known for her hot and erotic historical romances, Maggie Robinson has created another winning romance with LORD GRAY'S LIST, the first in her new The London List series. Set in London in 1820, I loved the premise of a female editor dressing as a man and producing a very intriguing newspaper, complete with want ads for employment, marriages and more.
With her black curls cut and wily reporting ways, Evie, if caught, is a scandal in her own right and the sparring and dueling between Evie and Ben is rapier sharp and sparkling with wit and humour. For his part, Ben is a very appealing hero. He is strong, kind and willing to take a new look at his role and responsibilities. It was also a delight to have the two main characters be a little older than normally found in Regency romances as that gave more depth to them both and allowed for a stronger backstory to their new relationship. The only thing I was quite "out of sorts" on was the overuse of terminology most often mouthed by crass youth on the streets. It jarred me out of the captivating story and I lost the lovely sense of time so nicely set by the author.
Despite that, LORD GRAY'S LIST is a very captivating story and Robinson's fans are sure to love it! So, join the ton in finding out what the London List has discovered! I can't wait to read the rest of this series!
Book Summary
From duchesses to chamber maids, everybody's reading it. Each Tuesday, The London List appears, filled with gossip and scandal, offering job postings and matches for the lovelorn--and most enticing of all, telling the tales and selling the wares a more modest publication wouldn't touch. . .
The creation of Evangeline Ramsey, The London List saved her and her ailing father from destitution. But the paper has given Evie more than financial relief. As its publisher, she lives as a man, dressed in masculine garb, free to pursue and report whatever she likes--especially the latest disgraces besmirching Lord Benton Gray. It's only fair that she hang his dirty laundry, given that it was his youthful ardor that put her off marriage for good. . .
Lord Gray--Ben--isn't about to stand by while all of London laughs at his peccadilloes week after week. But once he discovers that the publisher is none other than pretty Evie Ramsey with her curls lopped short, his worries turn to desires--and not a one of them fit to print. . .
