Jordan Cardwell finds himself returning to his hometown and family ranch six years after trying to talk his sister Dana Cardwell Savage into selling out that ranch and splitting it with him, their brother Clay, and sister Stacy. It took finding their mother's will in a cookbook that saved Dana from the pressure, because she was sole heir of the ranch. The ranch is going well and the siblings are getting dividend checks so everyone seems happy. But Dana is pregnant with twins and the doctor has just put her on bed rest for the final weeks, so her Marshal husband, Hud Savage, is going to take time off to help her.

Now Jordan comes back supposedly to attend his 20th high school reunion but in truth he is seeking JUSTICE AT CARDWELL RANCH. To be honest he could care less about his former high school alum's, but he did care about his best friend, who was suppose to have committed suicide in their senior year. He never believed it and Alex Winslow, another classmate, seems to have proof that he is right. It is while they are meeting that someone shoots Alex and as the only survivor he is an immediate suspect when Deputy Marshal Liza Turner begins to investigate.

Liza Turner is proud of her job and good at it, so with the marshal on leave she is to head the investigation. She also finds that she has growing feelings for Jordan and works hard to take him off the suspect list. But she also believes that she has no chance with him because he left once before believing that ranching is a death knoll. She, herself, loves the area and doesn't see herself leaving it. So, why get involved at all? Well maybe because he is one handsome devil and just standing beside him makes her insides flutter.

JUSTICE AT CARDWELL RANCH is an excellent read with a lot of real life mixed in with the twists and turns of a past and modern day mystery. It is astonishing how the author, B.J. Daniels is able to mix so many different mini plots and characters into the story that might have gummed up the main plot but everything and everyone got just the right amount of exposure to bring all the characters together to a shocking ending. There isn't a lot of romance to be had, but what is there is satisfying to even a hardcore romance reader. Anyone who had trouble with mean girls (or guys) in high school will enjoy this book, if only to let you know that you are not alone.
