Inspector Gamache and Jean Guy Beauvoir are called into the wilderness to solve a murder. The victim is a priest of an order that is virtually unknown by anyone including the Catholic Church. The only way anyone has ever heard of the order is through a tape that was released years before. An amateur production of Gregorian Chants, the recording brought fame and money to the order. That fame declined as they refused all interview and concert requests.

Notoriety might be the next step with this murder. Gamache and Jean Guy are the only two allowed to remain within the Abbey walls as they seek the killer's identity. To complicate things, Gamache's immediate superior and personal enemy appears with the autopsy report.

Jean Guy is battling his addiction to painkillers and dreading informing Gamache that he is involved with Armand's daughter. Francoeur is the Chief Superintendent of the Surete and he knows all of Beauvoir's weaknesses. He drives a wedge between Armand and Jean Guy.

In solving the mystery, Gamache will discover a schism in the monks at the Abbey. Some want to record another tape and some want to protect the isolation of the Abbey.

Ms. Penny delivers an amazing story with some fascinating history of music in the Catholic church, Gregorian chants in particular. While I love Ms. Penney's books, I always come away with a sense of sadness after reading them. Her characters seem so real and it's hard to see the destruction of a long term relationship and the betrayal of a colleague.

THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY is a book you won't want to miss.

Book Summary

The brilliant new novel in the New York Times bestselling series by Louise Penny, one of the most acclaimed crime writers of our time

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery’s massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.
